When I started my retail beef business in 2009, I saw it as an opportunity to be a part of the local food movement that was sweeping the nation. As I attended farmers markets and met with folks who were interested in buying local I quickly learned that what we’re doing here at the farm had a much greater implication than I had ever intended. The documentary Food, Inc. really opened many peoples eyes as to how the modern food industry is built. It made many consumers ask the question why. Why have we accepted this food system to be how we want to eat? The documentary, which I attached to this post, is really worth the watch. As a person who is directly involved in making food and who went to school to learn how to raise livestock, it certainly was an eye opening experience to witness how we’ve changed food in the last half century.
It’s also what fuels my passion for Broad Brook Beef and Pork. We strive to be an answer for consumers looking to part with modernized food. And while we wont be the answer for everyone’s needs, we can do our very best to serve our community with local, natural, hormone-free meat products and also support other farmers in our region to do the very same. As the years have progressed, I’ve learned a lot about food by visiting with customers. The Paleo Lifestyle has opened many doors for me and I wanted to provide you with some of the resources that I’ve found helpful. For those of you who aren’t as familiar with Paleo…I find this quick 13 step guide to be very helpful as well as the “Whole30” Paleo challenge written by Dallas & Melissa Hartwig of “It Starts with Food”. Finally, for Paleo enthusiasts who are looking for some awesome recipes, I highly recommend “Well Fed” by Melissa Joulwan, which has some of the most flavorful and easy to prepare dishes I’ve made since starting my own weightloss challenge.
